I see now that Eric Bourdonneau's involvement with the site was two years later. While I try to check stories as far as possible, obviously I am reliant to some extent on the sources I use, in this case the NYT article I cited.

I am as puzzled as you by the reference then to the old photographs. So you are suggesting that the statues were moved before they were broken and the bits smuggled?Paul Barfordhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/10443302899233809948noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8174756573570334952.post-68885937701365200602012-03-11T14:41:08.250-07:002012-03-11T14:41:08.250-07:00Thank you for your article and for adding more inf...Thank you for your article and for adding more information to the mix. I also enjoyed your related article on Spink & Son, the antiquities dealer that originally sold the Sotheby's statue.

There were a few deficiencies in the NYT article and as you repeat them here I would like to clarify

1. "The pair of sculptures...were still in position in old photos of the temple." Actually, this is one of the interesting aspects of this mystery. Despite intensive surveys of Koh Ker by the French (including by Henri Parmentier himself) these images do not appear in any old photos or records. If you have evidence otherwise please do share it.

2. I don't know what role "archaeologist Eric Bourdonneau" played in this story, but he certainly did not link the Koh Ker legs to these statues. That was first done by stone restoration expert Simon Warrack in 2007. Complete details are in my article below, including photos from Simon's original paper.

http://www.devata.org/2012/03/the-real-secret-of-cambodias-mythic-warrior-archaeological-insight/

You have an interesting site and I appreciate your coverage of these topics.
