Weiss’ Donations to Rhode Island School of Design Museum of Art

.
While the American Numismatic Society is busily trying to expunge from its public records the generous donations made by one of its patrons over the years, not all of the organizations with which Dr Weiss was associated are as alacritous to prematurely proclaim the accused "guilty" and draw a veil of secrecy over such associations. The Chasing Aphrodite blog has a post ('Arnold Peter Weiss’ 46 donations to RISD Museum of Art') detailing 46 objects donated to the museum between 1997 and 2010, 16 of them ancient coins. Some of these items have above-average collecting histories, linking them to named finds and named collectors., which shows that as a collector Weiss was eager and able to obtain this information from his suppliers. As the "Chasing Aphrodite" blog authors note however in not all cases does that unequivocally legitimise the object. as they are either directly or indirectly linked to dealers whose names come up in the ongoing Italian investigation. Nevertheless the publication of these details is welcome and this is a pattern which other prominent institutions like the ANS should be following.
