ASBOs, UK Metal Detectorists and the Heritage Debate

.
Talking of ASBOs "we WILL meet" is the message with which a UK metal detectorist has been repeatedly harassing my friend Nigel Swift on the phone since a South Coast metal detectorist irresponsibly and maliciously publicised his home address on a metal detecting blog a couple of weeks ago [for a similar incident see here]. This particular person (the one with a detector, not the one with a social conscience) appears well known in his local area and in a recent case an ASBO was awarded. This metal-detector-waving heritage hero ("passionately interested in the past" no doubt) is the one that recently published a comment to Heritage Action's blog in a discussion of finds reporting statistics: "[I] hope you all DIE soon".

People like these are precisely the sort of people the PAS wants to grab more and more millions of public quid to make into the "partners"  of the British Museum, archaeological heritage professionals - and to whom they want us all to entrust the exploitation of the archaeological record. Take a good look and decide what you think about that as a sustainable heritage management "policy".
