Archaeology for the People" Competition

The Joukowsky Institute for Archaeology and the Ancient World, Brown University is running an "Archaeology for the People" Competition:
"Articles should be about five to six thousand words in length; include no references, notes, or other scholarly apparatus; be accompanied by a single piece of artwork; and be submitted as a double-spaced Word document". I note that the rules do not say anywhere that the competition entry should be written in English.
Those metal detectorists whose own politics seem to be mostly just a little to the right of Fascist will be interested in the banner of the competition. The question is whether an article without references or a link even to further reading is archaeology or journalism.
