Stupid People and Antiquities


Kara Cooney ‏from Santa Monica, California is an Egyptologist at UCLA (currently writing a biography about Hatshepsut and a monograph about the reuse of Egyptian coffins during the 21st Dynasty). Her reaction to one of the texts hyping the Egypt MOU in the US is pretty to the point:
Stop buying Egyptian antiquities, you stupid people!
The problem is that many of the people buying this stuff unquestionably really do exhibit wilful stupidity and an uncritical inability to assess the full range of arguments in favour of cleaning up this trade.
