Lenborough Hoard Imagined Historical Context

A hoard of Anglo Saxon coins worth over £1 million
has been discovered by metal detectorists on a Christmas dig.

Lenborough hoard witness speculates on the possible interpretation of the deposit:

It is interesting to read that coins of Aethelred 11nd and Cnut which were mostly contained in the hoard, cover what is known as the tribute period. I wonder if that hoard represents what would have been,"The great wagon train robbery" of its day.

But of course since it was rudely hoiked without any regard to recoding its internal structure and disposition in the stratigraphic record or site context, we will never know. That is information lost due to the way it was crudely extracted from the ground - no better than in the nineteenth century.
