In relation to my post on apprehending and questioning the three men filmed apparently metal detecting on a scheduled site, a metal detectorist called "Dick" writes threatening me: "I have a photo to share". The mind boggles... What goes through the minds of these people? Why, actually, is it that we cannot discuss in a sensible manner how to deal with illegal activity with artefact hunters and collectors? Time and time again, raising the subject leads to these people trying to drag every discussion to the puerile and the personal level. I think this is a clear indicator that they need to be cut out of the discussion altogether, otherwise we'll never get anywhere. Sstopping us getting anywhere and upsetting their comfy laissez faire status quo is, of course, what the persistent tekkie/collector misbehaviour and sniping is intended to achieve. The problem of metal detecting is not nighthawks, but the number of "dicks" in the ranks of the hobby.
A blog commenting on various aspects of the private collecting and trade in archaeological artefacts today and their effect on the archaeological record.
