On this day... Twenty Years Ago

On this day, twenty years ago a social experiment was begun in England (not yet Wales) with the setting up of six pilot schemes which eventually would become the nationwide Portable antiquities scheme.  These were in Kent, Norfolk, the West Midlands, North Lincolnshi re, the North West (Cheshire, Lancashire, Merseyside, Greater Manchester and Cumbria) and Yorkshire. At this time, the FLOs were recording data on Excel spreadsheets PAS, and in the 1998 1997 - 1998 PAS Annual report we find that 13,500 objects had been recorded.
