British Double Standards on Collection-Driven Exploitation of the Archaeological Record

Joined up (not) thinking from the British Museum. In the BM press release about the seized Ukrainian artefacts they are hanging on to (see above) the museum writes that uncontrolled metal detecting "causes huge damage and loss of historical information". Yet somehow when it is British detectorists doing it, it somehow is not, but you can't have it both ways - what on earth is there a mention of the @findsorguk here anyway?  I think this is pretty insulting to Ukraine.

BM: unregulated metal detecting done by Ukrainians is bad, but when the Brits do it, oh no, not only is no damage (allegedly) done to the sites mined for collectables, but the results are "good" for archaeology. Double standards.
