@AmandaChadburnSadly a lot of archaeologists still have a knee-jerk reaction against metal detecting. A metal detector is merely a tool & can be used well or badly. In some cases eg conflict archaeology, it is the very best tool to use. I have a lot of trouble persuading people of this.
Which is why British archaeologists should STOP using the vanilla-term euphemism and start calling a spade a spade. As some have long argued, the problem is not the tool, but the phenomenon of "Collection-Driven Exploitation of the Archaeological Record". For the sake of accuracy ·
Just referring ever-so-vaguely to "the use of metal detectors" instead of defining the different types of use and which ones cause which concerns and why is just sloppy and unprofessional.
Oh dear, off he goes again, the man who finds nothing of importance, railing against the ones who find everything, how very very sad. Incidentally, regarding your comments that seem to suggest that all detectorists are nothing more than brain-dead money-grubbing morons, I would agree that some seem a little lacking when it comes to explanations literal, but, that does not in the least detract from their integrity and honesty regarding finds. [I once again refer to you, as an example of intelligence versus ignorance that member of the intelligentsia, James Fitton] So, I am sure you would like to see for yourself how the apple does not fall far from the tree when I present to you a scientific paper co-authored by my granddaughter Josie Sheppard, a Bill Gates sponsored scientist and keen detectorist, this paper explains how the team are attempting to eradicate the scourge of Malaria while at the same time attempting to preserve the insect and not upset the delicate ecological balance. But, I guess all this goes over your head, bloody detectorists!!!!
ReplyDeleteI cannot depart without once again commenting on your ridiculous comment modification requirement. Paul, it is ludicrous, it is so demeaning for you and reflects so badly on your alleged claims that all electronic searching is an aberration, and I am at a loss as to why you have not found it fit to quote scripture to bolster your claims. Anyhow, I am done with you now, it is time for me to lay my 81-year-old head on my pillow, sleep the sleep of the contented, and feel nothing but pity for those who are troubled by minor human problems, Have a good night moj kolega. [Forgive the non-accented ''o'']
ReplyDeleteIn what way is that a comment on the points made above? The only brain deadness visible here is that you seem to miss the fact that my remarks pertain to archaeologists and the terminology they use.
ReplyDeleteSo glad your daughter managed to CO-author something. You must be very proud to mention it here. It is a shame that either you or her have problems spelling the surname correctly, one "p" or two. It's a rare brand of stupid that when a person can't even spell their own name correctly.
Forgive the non-accented "o" - and the lack of awareness that in a inflected language like Polish, you'd be using the vocative.
ReplyDeletePaul the Troll, my dear chap, I have a couple of questions, are you really based in Poland, or, are the stories I am hearing that seem to cast a little doubt upon this claim correct? Secondly, regarding ''strata damage,'' I have recently conversed with a leading Archaeologist, very much your senior, [No mames no,etc.,] who assured me that serious archeology is only concerned with what is beneath the initial two feet of soil, hence the use of bulldozers, are you in agreement with this pronouncement, or are you in opposition? Bearing in mind that I have the fellow's name and details...
ReplyDeletePaul, my dear chap, why do you persist in blogging? Seemingly doing nothing else but, at taxpayers' expense, pouring forth bile regarding a perfectly legitimate hobby, and doing sweet F*** A** yourself to justify your pay cheque? I await your answer, but it will no doubt be skewed.
ReplyDeleteOh FFS. Why are metal detectorists and the archaeologists that consort with them, if not totally imaginary or misquoted, such jerks?

As for the tax-payer remarks, some people need to grow up: https://paul-barford.blogspot.com/2023/11/meritorial-discussion-hard-for.html
