Focus on UK Metal Detecting: What Would happen...?

An answer to the unreflexive tekkie question: "what do they [concerned conservationists] think would happen if the PAS went away?" is simple. If we accept (as most people evidently do) that "most detectorists are responsible", surely that would imply that if the PAS "went away", they'd still carry on "responsibly" and record finds directly with the HERs, and museums [as they did in quite large numbers before the PAS was set up]. You will not get responsible and law-abiding people suddenly acting irresponsibly and illegally if a voluntary scheme is removed will you? If the PAS has done its job properly, we'd have responsibility without the damaging spin and at lower cost. But, then, has it? What do you think?
