It seems the lunatics really have taken over the asylum in British archaeology. The team that recovered the Anglo-Saxon treasure known as the Staffordshire Hoard have won the Current Archaeology award for ‘The Best Rescue Dig of the Year, 2010’. Birmingham Archaeology dug it, overseen it says by Staffordshire County Council staff Stephen Dean and Ian Wykes, excavation directed ("overseen") by Alex Jones "with the work on site being directed by Bob Burrows". Well, at least we know. So if what we saw in that 2009 video really was the "best" British archaeology can offer these days, then what more can be said? Phil Barker, where are you now when Birmingham needs you? Turning in his grave no doubt.
