More UK Metal Detectorists Arrested

A 28-year-old man and a 23-year-old carrying detecting equipment were arrested in Thetford on April 24 on suspicion of going equipped to steal. The pair have been released on police bail until May 6.
A spokesman for Suffolk and Norfolk Constabularies said nighthawking has been raised as a “potential problem” in the Thetford area and is now included in officer’s daily briefings as something that should be given extra attention as part of general rural patrols. He asked for members of the public to report any suspicious behaviour to police ...
But then there was talk of a "crackdown" the last time this happened here in 2010. So how effective are these "crackdowns"? Maybe another approach is needed (though I am not advocating the violent one detectorists themselves apparently would favour).
