On a metal detecting forum near you, one "Blacknred" ("finds for 2nd July 2013" Wed Jul 03, 2013 12:32 am) has written breathlessly about his or her adventures in a field near their home in Warwickshire (so it seems). Here it is, as written, but with 19 annoying emoticons omitted:
Well i was going to stop detecting until the crops have gone , but as i was driving down the road i saw a tractor cutting down hay in a field so decided to go and ask for permission to detect it ;) the guy was a farm worker and said pop back at 5.00 and the boss will be here. So i popped back and asked him he said Yes ::g he also told me that the field was very Roman and they wouldn't allow it to be built on , well i knew this already as i had waited to try and see the guy that farms the next field along but i never seem to be there at the same time as him ;;z less than 1000 meters away was a Romano British settlement ::g I rang Philthy Phil and he was up for it ::g it was looking exciting :D [...] the Farmer said ring me and let me know how you get on as i have other fields you might like to try out :D ::g ::g [...] When we came out of the field the old bill were waiting for us :-O some plonker rang them and said two guys had gone into the field with guns =)) so the Filth came to get Philthy Phil =)) =))"Filth" is a pejorative term a certain class in Britain uses to refer to the police, and so-called "Philfy Phil" seems - from a comment below about his "flashing his badge" to get off the hook - to be yet another metal detecting policeman.
The finds made are of note. A photo of them on the forum shows 12 potentially recordable items from this casual search (just under a half of the Heritage Action Counters annual average for each active UK tekkie). Here's how they are described on the forum:
This "history hunter" obviously has not the first idea about what they have found, and how to make head or tail of it. What are the chances then, that all of the objkects that should reach an FLO will actually be on their desk in the next few days? The "round lead things with holes in" for example? Or will these spindlewhols end up in the clueless detectorist's scrap metal bucket with the other "lead things" without holes (also potential archaeological evidence)?but it was not so good ;;z plenty of old coppers and other bits but nothing notably Roman, that you would expect so close to a Roman settlement. Settings used today are different ;) Deus fast 12 Khz , Discrimination 5, sensitivity 88 , Reactivity 2, ground balance tracking. the best item i got was the small mount item any ideas on that , two small coins not sure if they are Roman or not , such poor detail ;;z The decorated strap thingy is nice any ideas , and the Buckle item, again any ideas Cheers ::g [...] Oh and i got some musket balls , a couple of round lead things with holes in , a big thimble and some other crap =)) :-O
