Digging for Jewish roots was seen as an act of nation building for a people trying to justify its existence to the world and to itself. “For the disquieted Israeli, the moral comforts of archaeology are considerable,” Amos Elon wrote in his 1971 book The Israelis: Founders and Sons. It provided a “reassurance of roots.”It also created a fertile ground for dodgy dealers to create a whole series of fakes:
