British police arrested a man on 3 May on suspicion of looting Egyptian antiquities on bail. He was later released but is reportedly
due to return to the police station in North-east London in early August for further questioning, the police said. The story broke on
this blog here:
The objects include a New Kingdom red granite engraving depicting a
Nubian face discovered in 2000 by the German European mission in King
Amenhotep II temple in Wadi Al-Hittan on Luxor’s west bank. The other
five artefacts are a collection of New Kingdom religious stelae and
statues of different sizes. [...] the person who claimed ownership of the five
objects did not have any documents that prove his ownership.
I also identified the six objects apparently concerned. So far everybody has been keeping very quiet about who this seller was,
or even what his nationality is, let us see if there will be more
information available when the next stage of the investigations is
underway.
