Today is the first anniversary of the looting of Mallawi Museum (in which at least one member of its staff was killed) during protests of the townsfolk roused by the news that was coming out of Cairo about the brutal clearing of the protest camps there. It should be recognized that the Museum was most likely attacked because it was a public building next to the police station. On August 14, when news of the sit-in dispersal reach Minya, protesters attacked 12 police stations, six of which they burned to the ground, and 13 police officers were killed and another 30 wounded with live fire. The situation in Egypt at the moment is far from simple, and it would be helpful to avoid simplistic black-and-white categorisation as some commentators are attempting.
