British artist Barnaby Barford works with both mass manufactured and antique porcelain figurines and cuts them up and adds elements to create from them new little scenes. They are rather clever and humerous, though at first sight the scenes seem cute (like the figures that they were made from), the message these little sculptures convey is more sad than romantic. The recent series (installation) entitled The Battle of Trafalgar reflects the artist's twisted vision of Trafalgar Square in London, with hoodies, litter and muggers among the pigeons. I wonder whether he does any with metal detectors? I note he sells his works through a gallery run by a David Gilll. Two British Barfords and two British Gills both working together in social critique, an odd coincidence. Time for another anti-preservationist conspiracy theory perhaps?
