Obviously the surest way to make some dosh with a metal detector is to hoik out a hoard which has lain hidden for centuries in the untouched soil beneath the plough's reach. Then you can sell it back to the people (the public whose heritage it rightfully is) you took it from. I suppose there are metal detectorists out there that will want us to believe that articles like this (from http://detecting.org.uk) about how to target potential archaeological hoard sites in search of a "reward" are written entirely 'tongue in cheek':
