Michael Press has a lengthy, interesting, sharply-phrased but well-supported thread on twitter on Tero Alstola's arguments about the ethics of handling looted cuneiform tablets. It starts here and concludes: Assyriology and other fields that study the past will continue in their failure to address the ethics of working w/ unprovenanced material, because so many scholars in these fields do not take ethics discussions remotely seriously.It would be interesting to read the response of that "Centre of Excellence" in Helsinki. But I do not think we will.
