Earth Day 2010

.
Today April 22nd is celebrated around the world as Earth Day, which aims to make people aware of the fragility of the natural environment and the need to exploit it wisely and sustainably. The US Secretary of State made a short statement (also available on video) stating that environmental awareness and activism are on the rise across the world – proof that Earth Day’s teachings have begun to change all of us, and change the environment we share. A few days ago I suggested that archaeologists should get involved in the propagation of the idea that the historical environment, the archaeological record which survives in the earth is also a finite and fragile resource that is worthy of preservation. It too should be exploited wisely and sustainably, and not collected away to generate short-term commercial profit and satisfy collectors' greed. What we need next year is to organize an Archaeological Resource Awareness Day.

Paul, we should like to get involved in promoting this excellent idea. The link is currently broken though.
