Lord Redesdale said on 24 October 2006 "The Sevso hoard undermines Britain's stand on illegal antiquities":
None of this evidence has been fully considered and there is an urgent need for a full examination of the origins and ownership of this treasure before determining its ultimate destination. While the treasure remains here with its status unresolved, it represents a standing challenge to the effectiveness of the measures in force in this country to combat the trade in illicit antiquitiesHe might as well have been speaking to a flock of seagulls bobbing up and down in the waves off the coast at Brighton. The effectiveness of the measures in force in the United Kingdom to combat the trade in illicit antiquities will long be the subject of myth and legend.
