Heritage Hero, Nikolay Tarasov |
Tarasov gave the find to the museum without asking for anything in return, because he believes that it's important for people to learn about the history of their country. The Siberian Times noted that the statue is probably worth more than if it was made of gold. And if it had been and it was found by a UK metal detectorist, the public would now be pondering how to raise the cash to buy the nation's heritage from those that, unlike the Russian fisherman, would hold it to ransom. I guess that's the difference between artefact hunters and accidental finders.
