Ka Nefer Nefer on PACHI

The PACHI 'honk if you hate heritage thieves' bumper sticker

I must admit I thought right would prevail in the Ka Nefer Nefer case, despite the Museum's resistance, and I gave it quite a lot of coverage on this blog. Intellectual curiosity alone (strangely not shared by the museum that stands by its collecting history for it) would demand getting to the bottom of some of the issues that narrative raises. So I had a bash at that, and came up against more than a few discrepancies which have yet to be explained. The starting point of my exploration was the Feb 15, 2006 article "Out of Egypt: From a long-buried pyramid to the Saint Louis Art Museum: The mysterious voyage of the Ka-Nefer-Nefer mask" by Malcolm Gay in the Riverfront Times. This was an excellent piece of investigative writing such as is seldom found in coverage of antiquity collecting. The alarm however had initially been raised by Michel van Rijn and Ton Cremers. Not covered here are some posts detailing similarities between this case and the "Cleveland Apollo", nor the issues of repatriation and museum issues generally, in which the Ka Nefer Nefer mask is mentioned.
