Report with assessment and recommendations concerning objects impounded at Martin Schøyen’s residence August 24, 2021
Museum of Cultural History, University of Oslo, March 2022. Date: 08/03/2022
The Ministry of Culture and Equality [of Norway] has received a report from the Museum of Cultural History in Oslo with expert assessment regarding the cultural objects from the Martin Schøyen’s collection that were seized by the police upon request from Iraqi authorities August 24, 2021.There are not a lot of surprises here. Some of this makes very irritating reading, considering how long these issues have been being raised. The report is damning. It concludes that most of the seized objects are likely to have been illicitly collected and traded. As a result, it recommends that they are returned to the Iraqi government. Martin Schøyen’s are understood to be contesting these conclusions.
