Over on a coiney lobbyist's blog near you, when challenged about his use of the work "significant" about yet another metal detected glittering (though rather worn) Maurice Tiberius geegaw, the Cultural Property Observer said... "well, it was significant enough to make the press and some coin collectors i know that specialize in the era think that it was significant--that's good enough for me". Which coin collectors in Washington DC does Mr Tompa "know" who specialise in the seventh century coinage of East Anglia? Perhaps it was the coin elves?
If this "significant" item had instead surfaced on the Munich coin market, how long would that North Elmham provenance and subsequent collecting history be attached to it as it passes through the hands of no-questions-asking collectors like those which Mr Tompa represents?
