Not just Metal Detectorists then

So it's not just metal detectorists then, lowered expectations really are taking a toll:
Young people in the UK lag behind most of the Western world in their mastering of the basic skills of literacy, numeracy and IT, according to an influential study published today.
England came 22nd for literacy and 21st for numeracy out of 24 countries says the Independent.

You will of course be dismissed with relish as an elitist snob by one side and with hypocrisy by the other but you've put your finger on something important. And it's not just literacy.

IMO, the essential qualifications for "doing" archaeology aren't just skill and knowledge but the capacity for ethical thought. Some activities need only the first two but archaeology (much like medicine) needs all three.
