Police were tipped off to the activities of a gang of looters when artefacts were seized with a falsified export permit. Three Colombians were arrested last week in the town of La Cruz in
southern Colombia, accused of trafficking in more than 850
archaeological relics.
The three are believed to be members of the same family, and are accused
of "illegally digging up (pre-Columbian) pieces and art". The artefacts
were stored in one of the diggers' homes and were being sold to
tourists and collectors, who were taking them out of the country.
