The Portable Antiquity Scheme's archaeological outreach does not seem to have penetrated very far at all. Mary Beard apparently thinks "archaeology" is "finding things" (Mary Beard, 'Cuts to archaeology' December 09, 2015).
Classics then is "reading things".
Meanwhile the cuts are affecting British archaeology in more serious ways than whether the finds of metal detectorists get recorded, but that does not get any mention at all in Beard's PAS-puff piece.
