Kent County Council Archaeology Services excavator on the inconclusive results of his little hole:
A number of possible theories, a hoard being one of them...though I accept it is a more typical grave assemblage. One other option, the site has been truncated by sand pit quarrying, antiquarian excavations and a turnpike construction...possibility that it is therefore a Victorian? stash of a disturbed grave?Yes, that bit of speculation seems calculated to excuse the tekkies for digging into a 'mound" on a known archaeological site. Why is he doing this? Is this kind of hoiking Kent's idea of "community archaeology"? What is going on over there?
