There are many tragedies in this map, but one of the ones of more immediate concern for this blog is that Palmyra, which the occupants are systematically tearing apart, is in one of the spidery corridors of power which look so fragile... However of potential significance is that this is the one where there is a long tongue of pink reaching along it, ending just six kilometres to the west of the ancient town ruins:
It seems that this may be the context of the increasing destruction of the remains of the ancient town, precisely on the side which is closest to the regime's troops, the two temples and tower tombs could have been used as cover by an attacking force.
