Egypt Proclaims Reward for Antiquity Finders

.
The Egyptian Ministry of Antiquities is offering a reward of between LE5,000 and LE50,000 to any citizen responsible for stolen antiquities being returned to the State (The Egyptian Gazette Online, Egyptian stolen antiquities incentive, April 23, 2011). That's what it says, not apprehension of any more of the abseiling thieves and return of the objects.

I don't think that would work in a country with a less well developed sense of what's morally acceptable, like Britain.

If there were rewards for shopping nighthawks the words of a detectorist on a forum - "let's face it, we ALL know people that nighthawk. I reckon a third of members at my club are at it" .... would take on special significance.
The level of potential rewards to be paid out would be unaffordable.

Better keep the system in Egypt, not here.

Well, it is an interesting legal situation, the Egyptian state is in effect buying what the law says is already its own property.
