On a metal detecting forum near you, member "Tomo" (Re: Youtubes from the Roman Hoard digging out Sat Sep 27, 2014 2:36 pm) informs us, among other things, concerning the ‘Dunelme hoard’ hoik which we see in the videos to which I posted a link yesterday:
The pot was delivered to the flo the next day and the finder was praised for excavating it intact and not emptying it. It was then picked up straight away by the museum who couldn't wait to get there (sic) hands on it. Yes it would have been nice to leave until the flo was ready to attend at a later date but then it could have been a post entitled, Hoard found and then night hawked and lost forever.Unless of course the searchers put into action the contingency plans that they had previously responsibly formulated for just such an occurrence.
All it needs is to drive a car or tractor onto the field straddling the hoard findspot and put it in gear with the handbrake on, and nobody is going to get at it. Put Mr Tattoo and a friend in it with a big stick, a thermos of soup, some sandwiches, his mobile and arrange for someone to come and relieve them at three and the hoard is safe from all [except perhaps Mr Putin and his infiltrating polite little green men]. I cannot think what the FLO is doing "praising" them for this hoard hoik - has she seen the video like the rest of us?
