Focus on UK Metal Detecting: The Dead Grandfather catch


Heritageaction, replying to my post "Focus on UK Metal Detecting:" Awkward thing, ignorance", in answer to the rhetorical question: "what happens to all those hundreds of thousands of dugup finds...." and thinking in the longer term than current UK archaeological policies (I use the term loosely) replies -
Millions actually. Our counter recently ticked past 11.5 million. It's sobering to think that most of those already are or soon will be the property of someone's deceased grandfather and that nothing else will ever be known about where they came from.
and they will end up being sold by heirs who have not the foggiest idea what they've got and how much any of it is worth.
