Viktor Sarianidi, the Russian archaeologist who unearthed the Bactrian treasure of Tillya Tepe in 1978 has died aged 84, his obituary and some of the events surrounding the excavation of the treasures, their deposition in the museum and subsequent controversy about their fate can be read in the Telegraph. His Bactrian Gold was one of the first books I bought when I came to Poland back in the 1980s as at the time I was taking an interest in the Silk Routes. Fantastic book, fantastic translation.
